Congratulations
on your purchase of the new
DOODAD EZ Note Transposition Wheel¨

the easiest way to learn musical scales.

How To Use: To use your Transposition Wheel, simply turn the patented EZ Knob until "do" is positioned underneath the letter of the scale you want to learn. In the picture above, the key of D has been selected. Now, just read the major scale off of the wheel! As you can see, for the key of D we have

Do
Re
Mi
Fa
Sol
La
Ti
Do
D
E
F#
G
A
B
C#
D

Chords: Chords are just as easy. Use the chord numbering wheel in the center according to the following chord definitions:

Chord Name
Notes
Example in D
Major
I III V
D = D F# A
Dominant 7th
I III V VII-flat
D7 = D F# A C
Minor
I III-flat V
Dm = D F A
Minor 7th
I III-flat V VII-flat
Dm7 = D F A C

Transposing: Now, suppose you want to learn a song, but it's in the wrong key. For example, the song in the songbook is written in the key of G, but you want to play it in the key of D. How do you translate the chords and notes from the songbook into the key you want to play them in?

The Transposition Wheel to the rescue. Position the wheel so that do is under the key in the songbook (e.g. G). Now, look at the key you want to play (e.g. D). The number on the inner circle indicates how many semitones are between the songbook key and the desired key (in this case, 5). To transpose the key (or any note in the song) simply use your Transposition Wheel to add this number to each key.

Confused? Let's continue the example. You're singing a simple folksong that uses the following chords in the songbook: G, C, Em, Am, and D7.

You want to play in the key of D. Twirling your Transposition Wheel, you position do under G and look for D - it's at position V (5). So every time you see a G chord (or note), you will play a D chord (or note). Now, apply the same change to all the other chords.

Turn the wheel until do is underneath C. At position V you find G. So where the songbook has a C chord in the key of G, you will play a G chord in the key of D.

Turn the wheel until do is underneath E. At position V you find B. So you will play a Bm chord where you see Em in the book.

Continuing, you translate all the chords:

Chord in music book
Chord to play (Transposition)
G
D
C
G
Em
Bm
Am
Em
D7
A7
